What is this Certification?
ONC's Health IT Certification Program ensures EHR systems like ours meet essential standards for functionality, security, and meaningful use. This voluntary certification is vital for participating in HHS programs like MIPS, ensuring EHRs maintain a standardized format for secure patient data exchange. Criteria are set by the Department of Health and Human Services.
ONC Cures Updates
The 21st Century Cures Act, enacted on December 13, 2016, by President Barack Obama, aims to reduce EHR systems' regulatory burdens and enhance data interoperability using FHIR-API standards. Post-enactment, the ONC and CMS reviewed it, leading to the ONC’s 21st Century Cures Act Final Rule. This rule, published in the Federal Register by Health and Human Services on 08/04/2020, modifies the 2015 Edition Health IT Certification Criteria. It includes new criteria, revises existing ones, and removes some criteria to streamline health IT.
Importance to Users
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is advancing the Cures Act to enhance health data exchange and patient access to medical records. The ONC's final rule focuses on providing cost-free electronic medical record access to patients and removing technical and cost barriers for providers. This rule mandates a standards-based API for smooth electronic health information (EHI) exchange, fostering a competitive market for health IT tools. APIs facilitate communication between different systems, enabling on-demand patient record access through chosen applications and enhancing clinician-to-clinician and clinician-to-patient communication. These advancements are crucial for transparent, patient-centered care in modern healthcare.
